How to Seek God and Draw Closer to Him

How to Seek God and Draw Closer to Him

“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. [...]”-James 4:8

A wonderful promise to a wonderful command. God is here with you, and the closer you get to Him, the more you get to experience Him.

Yet, so few can confidently say they’ve experienced the presence of God. He often feels far from us, like an unreachable entity.

But He promises that those who seek Him will find Him (Jeremiah 29:13)

How, then, can you seek and draw closer to God?

Read Your Bible

The Bible is God’s love letter through which He reveals Himself to us.

In Scriptures, we get to encounter God. We get to know who He is, His heart, desires, plans, principles, and decrease.

Everything about God is in the Bible. There is no better place to look for and find Him. Apart from Scriptures, you’ll never truly know God.

Be intentional about spending time in His Presence and ask the Holy Spirit to open your spiritual eyes so you see God clearly.

Pray and Fast

There is no true knowing without communication. And prayer is how you communicate with your heavenly Father. Through prayer, you learn to recognize His voice, understand His will, and enter a continued communion with Him.

Fasting allows you to deny yourself (Matthew 16:24) and choose God. It is a commitment to say that you choose God over any earthly pleasures or desires.

Prayer connects your heart to God’s heart. Fasting draws your eyes and attention away from worldly occupation to godly and heavenly matters.

Praise and Worship

The human mind is flawed. It easily forgets prior commitments and promises. That’s why you need to continually remind yourself of who God is.

Praise God for all He has done for you. Worship Him for who He is, because He is great.

Fill your days with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart (Ephesians 5:19).

Tell your soul who God is. Pay attention around you to see where His presence is being manifested.

Seek Godly Fellowship

“For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”-Matthew 18:20

You are part of the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12-27). God wants you to experience love among other brothers and sisters. He often moves and reveals Himself through others.

He calls you to be part of a beautiful family. You need others to grow and be fruitful. Don’t be tempted to walk the Christian life alone.

If you haven’t found your local community, ask Him to lead you. He will place you among like-minded people with whom you’ll get to discover and experience Him on a different level.

God wants to be with you.

He is holding His hand toward you. Reach out and take it. Seek Him, and you will find Him. He is very close.

Set a few minutes aside each day and spend time in the Word. Slowly, but surely, you’ll know Him fully.

Stay blessed!
